In the city directory for 1889, he is a 'canmaker' living on McKnight's Alley. That was the home of his father.
In the NJ state census, 1905, he is in Bordentown, 3rd Ward, Thompson St, household 47/47. He is a railroad laborer, head of a household that includes his siblings Henry, a mill hand, Eliza, Mary Carter, a millhand, also Mary's son William Carter age 6.
