ROY--Joseph Nicholas Santarelli, 93, passed away Tuesday, August 16, 2005 at the McKay-Dee Hospital in Ogden.

He was born July 20, 1912 in Denver, Colorado, a son of Pasco and Raffaella DeMichele Santarelli. He married Leah Schofield on July 27, 1947 in Elko, Nevada. Leah died on August 13, 1973.

Joseph was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church.

He graduated from Ogden High School in 1932. He worked with the Bureau of Public Roads assisting in the construction of the Al-Can Highway in Alaska, after which, he joined the US Navy as a gunnery instructor. Following WWII, he joined the Utah General Depot where he worked as a mechanic until his retirement. He then operated the Utah Tavern, which he inherited from his father, Pasco.

His interests included an occasional round of golf, a hobby he began as a youth caddying at the Ogden Country Club and he also enjoyed bowling.

Surviving are his children, Joseph Lee Santarelli, Roy; Beverly Jean Schwenk, Costa Mesa, CA; Donna R. Phipps, Redondo Beach, CA; Lois Jean Blacketer, San Antonio, TX; E. Jeri Dixon, Ogden; Dennis Phipps, Los Angeles, CA; eight grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren, one great-great-grandchild. Also surviving are his siblings, Adelina Paoli, Elko, NV; Ernestine Nielson, Ogden; Teresa Kartchner, Plain City; Mary Feasel, Elko, NV; Angie (James) Jensen, Boise, ID; Angelo Santarelli, Ogden.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Leah Martha Santarelli and his friend Martha (Rudie) Chapman, who was his constant companion after his wife's passing.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday, August 23, 2005, 10:00 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 2740 Pennsylvania Ave., with Father Reuse, celebrant. Family and friends may call at Myers Mortuary, 845 Washington Blvd., Ogden, Monday evening from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. A Vigil service will be held at 6:00 p.m.

Interment, Washington Heights Memorial Park where military honors will be accorded.
